Central Bhutan

Trongsa

The historic centre of the country, where the largest dzong in Bhutan watches over a deep river gorge.

The valley

A closer look at Trongsa

Trongsa sits at the middle of Bhutan, on the old east–west trade route. Every king of Bhutan has held the title of Trongsa Penlop before taking the throne, so the town carries real weight in the country's history.

Trongsa Dzong is the biggest fortress in Bhutan, stretched along a ridge above the Mangde Chhu gorge. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon. We suggest one night, so you see the dzong in evening light and hear the river from your room.

  • Trongsa Dzong, the largest fortress in Bhutan
  • Ta Dzong watchtower and royal heritage museum
  • Chendebji Chorten on the road from Pele La
