Bhutan Entry Requirements
Passports, insurance, permits, health and the rules every visitor should know before flying to Paro.
Overview
What you should know
Bhutan's entry rules are simple but firm. Every visitor travels with a licensed operator, carries valid travel insurance, and pays the daily Sustainable Development Fee.
We prepare all the paperwork. This page is so you know what to expect and what to bring.
Documents
- Passport valid at least six months beyond your travel dates
- Visa clearance letter, which we email you before departure
- Travel insurance covering medical treatment and evacuation
- Route permits for eastern and restricted areas, arranged by us
Health and altitude
Most valleys sit between 1,200 and 3,100 metres. Altitude sickness is uncommon on cultural routes, but we still keep the first day light. Trekking itineraries include proper acclimatisation days.
No vaccinations are mandatory for entry. Bring your usual medication in original packaging with a prescription.
Rules worth knowing
- Tobacco is heavily restricted and smoking in public places is banned
- Drones need government permission, which is rarely granted
- Photography is not allowed inside most temple sanctums
- Dress modestly at dzongs and temples: covered shoulders and long trousers or skirts
